The Land Partnership

The Land Partnership

Throughout NSW, the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP) implements a range of activities and strategies designed to improve mental health knowledge, reduce stigma, link people to services and develop community resilience.

Like many people working in agriculture, The Land’s journalists have sometimes found themselves becoming accidental counsellors – someone outside a farmer’s family and their immediate circle of friends who they could share the burden with. Based on these interactions, it became apparent that a resource which could shine a light on mental health would be relevant to The Land’s readership, and provide a valuable community service.

Glove Box Guide to Mental Health

Glove Box Guide to Mental Health 2012 - Front coverIn 2012, RAMHP and ‘The Land’ Newspaper formed a partnership to release a special publication known as the “Glove Box Guide to Mental Health”. The magazine was inserted into the full run of The Land newspaper in late October 2012 (circa 55,000 distribution), and an additional 10,000 copies were printed for partnering sponsor and supporters.

The Guide provided vital information about simple and effective strategies to promote and maintain mental health. It also featured a number of personal stories of those who have experienced symptoms of mental illness and their journeys to recovery.

Glove Box Guide to Mental Health 2013 - Front coverThe 2012 Guide received fantastic anecdotal feedback from The Land readers and RAMHP stakeholders and communities, and as a result The Glove Box Guide was again produced by RAMHP and The Land in 2013. As well as providing even more individual stories from rural people, the Guide showcased the innovative ways rural communities support each other, and how being engaged in your community can protect your mental health. The valuable feedback received from 2012 shaped the 2013 content.

Online Forums

As part of the drive to get more people in the bush talking about mental health, RAMHP’s partnership with The Land progressed following The Glove Box Guide to develop monthly online forums centred on mental health.

The forums are hosted by The Land on the first Friday of each month, with each forum focusing on a different mental health-related topic. RAMHP identify a panel of experts who use a live feed to answer participants’ questions between 2-3pm on the day.

Each month, the forum attracts approximately 100-120 participants, with 150-180 observers.

To find out about upcoming forums, or to read about previous forums, click here. To participate in or observe the forums go to The Land website on the day of the forum and follow the link on the home page.
