Tony Coggins @ CRRMH

The Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP) and the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health (CRRMH) had the pleasure of hosting Mr Tony Coggins, Head of the mental health promotion team at the South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

While spending time with the RAMHP team, Tony provided direction and advice on many of our projects. Tony also presented a workshop on the Mental Well-being Impact Assessment.

As part of his role at Maudsley, Tony was instrumental in developing the Mental Well-being Impact Assessment (MWIA )toolkit. The MWIA toolkit provides a structured analysis of how policies, proposals, programmes, and projects influence mental health and well-being. The toolkit is the first tool for conducting a MWIA globally and has been tested and used within a number of regions and across the world.

When asked what he thought his biggest achievement was during his time at Maudsley, after much deliberation Tony said he felt the change he helped make in the strategic direction of the Foundation was his most important. After many years of focussing on treating mental ill-health, there was a dramatic shift towards working with partners to promote mental well-being for all, including health professionals.

RAMHP staff also learnt from another program delivered by the Maudsley mental health promotion team: the happier@work program. The program looks at what impacts the happiness and well-being of people at work and how to maximise it. The program aims to reduce sickness and absence, and improve productivity in employees while responding to the challenging reality of a working life. In a health care context, happier health staff has resulted in improved patient experience. Given the similarities happier@work shares with RAMHP's Act-Belong-Commit program, RAMHP staff found discussions around the Maudsley program particularly useful.

Tony’s advice to anyone looking to keep mentally healthy is to find what makes your heart sing and to do more of it. Tony keeps mentally healthy by spending lots of his spare time with family and friends.

RAMMHP and the CRRMH will continue to work with Tony, and build an ongoing partnership with the mental health promotion team at the South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
