Evening with Allan Sparkes

On the 27th of November 2013, the Narrabri community were invited to listen to beyondblue Ambassador Allan Sparkes' personal story of depression and overcoming adversity.

Allan became one of only five people to be awarded Australia's highest decoration for bravery, the Cross of Valour, after putting his life on the line and rescuing an 11-year-old boy from a flooded storm water drain. However the rescue signalled a downward spiral into post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

Around 80 people attended the night and listened to Allan's amazing journey including his recovery from debilitating mental illness, which was a roller coaster ride of personal challenges, testing his courage and resolve over more than a decade.

The event was supported by Life Worth Living Narrabri, New England Medicare Local, the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health (CRRMH), the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP), Farm-Link and AgVantage Commodities.
