Angry Anderson in Canowindra

On Wednesday 30 October, RAMHP supported the Canowindra Depression and Anxiety Group in hosting an information night at Canowindra High School to raise awareness of depression and anxiety. Australian rock singer-songwriter, television presenter-reporter, actor, and political activist Angry Anderson spoke to over 200 people about his own experiences with depression and how he was able to move forward.

Local GP Dr Kumar opened the evening, psychiatrist Tristram Duncan spoke about the effects of mental illness, and Nick Jacobs from The Trading Post was the MC.

The night provided members of the community with information about mental illness, how to stay well, and how to support others. As well as increasing people's awareness of mental health, it also helped to form local support groups for people who may be affected by mental illness.

Partners in this project include local GPs, Canowindra Community Health Centre, Western NSW Medicare Local, Lions Australia, NSW Department of Primary Industries,  Cabonne Shire, Canowindra High School and Cabonne Community Transport.

Following the information night The Canowindra Depression and Anxiety Group are planning to begin monthly social meetings for people with a mental illness and their carers to participate in. For more information you can contact The Group on their Facebook page.
